Feature Reno - Restyling a Family Home in Blenheim

Posted Wednesday, 2 December 2015

The McMillan household was a dated and tired 1970’s home in a great location. The client’s wanted to maximise their potential space and create an open plan, light and spacious living area for themselves and their teenage family along with a great space for entertaining in. The house is situated on a large private section and has a pool and sheltered patio areas so an upgrade to the existing house, rather than a move to a newer house on a smaller section which potentially lacked shelter and privacy, seemed like a better option all round.

Daniel from Smith and Son’s provided some creative thinking, by removing walls and using the existing footprint of the house, he and his team were able to create a modern open plan living environment making the house feel bigger with more light and airiness.  The McMillan’s gained an additional ensuite bathroom off their master bedroom and scullery off their kitchen without actually having to extend the house, just the ability to think outside of the current floorplan and manoeuvre walls was really important in maximising what was already there.

The overhaul of the existing bathroom added a real sense of luxury and modernization to the house, the idea to section off the open plan bathroom with a false wall to create some privacy around the toilet area was a great idea. This false wall then created a back drop to the vanity unit and mirror and allowed an additional wall-space to be cleverly utilized within the design and layout of the bathroom.

The new double glazed aluminium ranch sliders and windows have added to the warmth of the property and created better flow out onto the patio. It was challenging removing the existing 3 doors that really shut out light and accessibility but the finished effect and practicality of the new aluminium doors really completes the living spaces. The kitchen was dark and cave like poked away in the middle of the house, its now a modern, free-flowing kitchen with its own scullery, bringing the kitchen up to date and making it incredibly functional.

The whole house transformation has given the house an incredible new lease of life throughout, the fresh new spaces created from the previously tired house of yesteryear, is a credit to the vision of everyone involved in the project.
