Transforming Kitchen Spaces

Posted Monday, 23 May 2016

Turning a small and cramped kitchen into a modern, open plan space can feel quite liberating. In transforming the heart of the home you are set to gain a more liveable and workable floor plan to enjoy for years to come.

The owners of this Rakaia home wanted to open up the kitchen space and create a welcoming, modern space. Feeling that the kitchen was too dark and had become old fashioned, they planned for a bigger kitchen and to give it a fresh new look and style.

Before Photos: Original dividing wall to hallway & small pantry

Originally built in the 1930s, the task at hand was to change the small unworkable kitchen into something bigger and more useable. By knocking down the central dividing wall which joined with the hallway, more space was available to create a longer kitchen, where new full height storage cabinetry was installed and stainless steel fridge.

The existing pantry had a small external window, so when the pantry was removed this window was made bigger, resulting in lots of natural light now available from two kitchen windows. The white clean cabinetry is thoroughly modern and set against the glitzy texture of the splash back tiling, and warmth of the wooden flooring, the result is a beautifully stylish space.

The new kitchen area flows into the dining area, forming an open plan living space which is more suited to today's lifestyle. The owners are able to use the space more freely now for their different purposes, whether it is entertaining, or working in, it is a functional and practical space which will stand the home in good stead in the future.
